Use GWC in ChatGPT

GWC lets ChatGPT list, search, read and edit files in folders that you explicitly share from your PC.

Installing GWC for VS Code does not give ChatGPT access by itself. You must share a folder on your PC and then approve a GWC connection from ChatGPT.

• An active GWC Personal Connect Pass.
• The PC that holds your files must be on, with VS Code or GWC Studio open and GWC running.
• Use the same GWC account on the PC and when you connect from ChatGPT.
• GWC Remote Connect v1 uses one PC for this connection.

1. Install GWC for VS Code. Install the GWC extension on the PC whose files you want to use. See the download and installation details.
2. Share a folder. In VS Code or GWC Studio, open ChatGPT access and choose the folder you want ChatGPT to be able to use.
3. Add the GWC app in ChatGPT. ChatGPT opens GWC sign-in. Sign in to your GWC account and complete your two-step code if your account uses it.
4. Choose folders and permissions. On the GWC connection page, select at least one folder that you already shared from this PC.
   • Read files: Required. ChatGPT can list, search, and read files in the folders you select.
   • Edit files: Optional. Edits ask for confirmation on this PC unless you turned on “Allow edits without asking” for that folder.
5. Allow access. Finish the connection and return to ChatGPT.

If the connection page says your PC or folders are not ready, keep VS Code or GWC Studio open. The page checks again automatically, and you can also choose Refresh.

For an edit, GWC shows the file and shared folder on your PC. Choose View changes to compare before and after, then choose Allow or Deny.

An edit needs your approval unless you explicitly turned on “Allow edits without asking” for that folder on the PC.

Approval requests expire after 90 seconds. If one expires, ask ChatGPT to try that action again and answer the new prompt on your PC.

• It cannot use folders you did not share and select.
• It cannot use protected credential or secret files that GWC blocks.
• It cannot run commands or programs on your PC.
• It cannot work with your PC while that PC or its GWC connection is offline.
• ChatGPT cannot approve its own pending PC approval.

• Stop sharing a folder on the PC: In ChatGPT access in VS Code or GWC Studio, choose Stop sharing. Remote requests to that folder stop working.
• Disconnect the app on the GWC website: Open Settings → Connected apps and choose Disconnect. That app loses this connection and its permissions, but the folder stays shared from the PC until you stop sharing it there.
• Disconnect the app in ChatGPT: Remove or disconnect GWC in ChatGPT to end that ChatGPT connection.

If you do not want a folder offered for a future connection, stop sharing that folder on the PC.

Your full local folder path stays on your PC. GWC uses a folder identifier and label for the cloud connection instead of sending that absolute path.

For a request you start, GWC relays only the data needed for that request. This can include the relative file path and the file content that is read or edited.

The cloud activity audit records the connection, shared-folder identity, relative path when applicable, and the outcome. It does not record file contents.

Your PC also keeps its local journal of remote actions.
